DR JONATHAN MARTIN

Gastroenterologist - MBBS, FRACP, PhD

Dr. Martin qualified from the University of Adelaide in 1991 and went on to complete specialist training as a consultant physician and gastroenterologist in 1998 at the Repatriation General Hospital, SA and Flinders Medical Centre. He completed a PhD in colorectal cancer prevention in 2004 at Flinders University.

 

He is trained in endoscopy and colonoscopy and for the past 25 years has remained passionate about looking after patients with gastrointestinal health problems.

 

In 2003 he was the first in Adelaide to train in capsule endoscopy and then in 2007 the first in Adelaide to train in balloon enteroscopy both of which remain essential tools for investigating and treating small intestinal disease. He has published in multiple peer review journals and presented at conferences at a national and international level.

 

With regard to capsule endoscopy he has 18 years experience and has personally performed over 2000 of these procedures. He has been actively involved in training of capsule endoscopists in South Australia. When the conjoint committee for training in gastrointestinal endoscopy began accreditation in 2017 for capsule endoscopy, Dr. Martin has been an active member of the accreditation team responsible for approval of training.  He wrote the first guidelines for capsule endoscopy reporting for Australasia.

 

He was a Senior Staff Specialist at Repatriation General Hospital SA from 2005 to 2016 and then at Lyell McEwin Hospital from 2016 to 2021. He remains Senior Visiting Specialist at Ashford, Stirling and Calvary Adelaide Hospitals.  He has been a Senior Lecturer at Adelaide University and Flinders University in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and taught at the undergraduate and post graduate level.

 

Dr Martin continues a wide interest in gastroenterology, including investigation of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, chronic diarrhoea, swallowing disorders and abdominal pain.  He has extensive experience in investigating managing diseases of the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver and pancreas.

 

Dr. Martin has been in private practice in Gastroenterology since 1999.  He has had a long-standing interest in diet and gastrointestinal problems and since 2017 become passionate about low carbohydrate diets for weight loss and gut health. He often works closely with his wife Rachelle for complex diet and gut problems.
